The 4th Floor
Directed by: Josh Klausner Written by: Josh Klausner Starring: Juliette Lewis, William Hurt, Austin Pendleton, Shelley DuVall and Tobin Bell. Distributed by: Millenium Entertainment Plot: A young woman moves into a Brooklyn apartment building, against her boyfriend's wishes. But she discovers that the downstairs neighbor may be a dangerous, and territorial psychopath. The Good: -Creepy atmosphere. -Good acting. -A great early performance by Tobin Bell (who would later be known as Jigsaw) -Strange, but satisfying twist ending. The Bad: -Some plot holes. -William Hurt's "weatherman" character is incredibly cringey. All In All: If you're looking for a solid horror/thriller this is a good choice. It's nothing amazing or original, but it's consistently enjoyable. My Rating: 7/10

Frogs
Directed by: George McCowan Written by: Robert Hutchison and Robert Blees. Starring: Sam Elliott, Ray Milland, Joan Van Ark, Adam Roarke, Judy Pace, Lynn Borden, Nicholas Cortland, Lance Taylor Sr. and Holly Irving. Distributed by: American International Pictures Plot: The Crockett family gathers to celebrate Grandfather Crockett's birthday on his Florida island home, but the island's animal population chooses the day to strike back against the Crockett family's years of pollution. Snakes, lizards, alligators and birds are organized into an army by the smartest animals of all. The frogs. The Good: -Effective animal attack scenes. -Decent acting. The Bad: -No matter what they do, frogs will never be scary. -Takes too long to get going. -Dumb characters and awkward dialouge. -Too many shots of cute little frogs hopping about set to scary music. All In All: I repeat, frogs are not scary. But some of the other animals make up for that, and while essentially cheesy, the film delivers some suspense and a fun, campy time. Only proceed if you enjoy cheese. My Rating: 6/10

Mulberry St
Directed by: Jim Mickle Written by: Jim Mickle and Nick Damici. Starring: Nick Damici, Kim Blair, Rodney Gray, Bo Corre, Larry Fleischman, Larry Medich, Javier Picayo, Tim House and John Hoyt. Distributed by: Lionsgate and After Dark Films. Plot: A group of survivors holes up in their apartment building as a rat-spread virus, which causes zombie like behavior, decimates Manhattan. The Good: -Likeable characters. -Great make-up effects for such a low budget film. -The always fantastic Nick Damici. -Wallows in the real feel of Manhattan. The Bad: -Ugly and erratic cinematography. -Falls apart towards the end and goes the moody, depressing route. All In All: An adept and effective micro budget film with a can-do attitude. If it had remained rock solid throughout it would've really been a winner. But some sloppiness holds it back. Still very worth your time. My Rating: 7/10

The Barrens
Directed by: Darren Lynn Bousman Written by: Darren Lynn Bousman Starring: Stephen Moyer, Mia Kirshner, Allie MacDonald, Peter Dacunha, Erik Knudsen and David W. Keeley. Distributed by: Anchor Bay Entertainment Plot: A man takes his family for a camping trip in the infamous New Jersey Pine Barrens, home of the legendary Jersey Devil. But as personal issues and family secrets mount, the line between reality and fiction is blurred and he fears that his family is being stalked by the monster. The Good: -Great performance by Stephen Moyer. -Some decent suspense. -Satisfying ending. The Bad: -The family issues and psychological horror don't gel with the real scares. -Frequently boring and slow-paced. -May take a few too many liberties with the Jersey Devil mythology for some people. -Sloppy digital and practical effects. All In All: Although it has it's moments, this qualifies as Bousman's worst production yet. My Rating: 4/10
